Frenkel-Kontorova Model

The Frenkel-Kontorova model is a harmonic chain (mimic a layer of atoms) in a spatially periodic potential (mimic the substrate). The chain is driven by a constant force and which is damped by a velocity-proportional damping (emitting waves into the substrate).
