The relation between Spherical and Carthesian Coordinates

As we saw already, it is convenient to describe the patterns through the two angles theta and phi. The transformation from the cartesian coordinates into the sperical coordinates is demonstrated above.

Consider theta to be the geographical heigth and phi to be the geographical length, respectively. The light beam then coincides with the polar axis.
